In a move to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic items and encourage the use of recyclable and reusable products, Dubai and Abu Dhabi join forces to establish tariff on plastic usage, with the ultimate goal of banning it entirely in two years' time.
Earlier this year Dubai announced a ban on the consuming plastic bags at grocery stores and supermarkets with an added charge of 25 fils, starting 1 July 2022. The fee applies to restaurants, pharmacies, retail & clothing stores, and e-commerce deliveries as well.
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) announced the ban will be effective from June 2022, based on its integrated single-use plastic policy that was introduced in 2020.
EAD is also heading towards phasing out single-use styrofoam cups, plates and food containers by 2024.
